Kybella is an injectable product that causes permanent destruction of fat cells. It is made of deoxycholic acid (a substance found in bile) and is approved for treatment of the “double chin”. It typically takes 2-4 treatments every 4-8 weeks, depending on the volume of fat. Up to 6 treatments may be administered. 79% of patients treated with Kybella were satisfied with their results. The great thing about Kybella is that it literally only takes minutes to inject and you can immediately return to your normal activities. The average cost ranges from $1200-$1800 per treatment.

The most common side effects include:

  • Swelling for up to a month

  • Bruising

  • Hardness of fat for several weeks

  • Diffiulty swallowing for a few days due to swelling

  • Immediate pain/discomfort-we usually will give you topical numbing cream, 800 mg of ibuprofen, and ice before the procedure. You will also apply ice right after the treatment

  • Numbness of the treated area–about 10% of people may have numbness for up to a month

  • 4% of people ma develop some temporary marginal mandibular nerve injury that may cause a crooked smile. This will resolve.

  • First treatment will have the most side effects

You may not be an ideal candidate for Kybella if you have significant skin laxity of the neck area with or without jowling. If you do, then the Precision TX laser may be a better alternative. If you have prominent plastysmal banding (the vertical muscular lines that extend down the front of the neck), these may appear more conspicuous after removing the fat. However, Botox can be used to soften these bands once the fat is removed. No matter what, at The Bellevue Laser & Cosmetic Center, we can help you find a solution. If your “double chin” bothers you, then make an appointment for a cosmetic consultation with one of our providers today to see if you are a good candidate for Kybella!
